Joshua 23:11
Take good heed therefore vnto your selues, that ye loue the Lord your God. Joshua 23:11 (KJV)
The book of Joshua records the events after the Israelites’ exodus from Egypt and their journey through the wilderness. Joshua, Moses’ successor, led the Israelites into the promised land of Canaan. In Joshua 23, Joshua is old and nearing the end of his life. He gathers all the leaders of Israel and addresses them, reminding them of God’s faithfulness and giving them instructions for their future.
Joshua begins by exhorting the Israelite leaders to take heed and examine themselves. Self-examination is an essential aspect of spiritual growth and maintaining a close relationship with God. It involves reflecting on one’s thoughts, actions, and motives in light of God’s Word. By examining themselves, they would be able to evaluate their loyalty and love for the Lord.
Joshua emphasizes the importance of loving God. Love for God is a central theme throughout the Bible. Jesus Himself identified it as the greatest commandment: “Love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind” (Matthew 22:37, KJV).
The love that Joshua speaks of is not merely an emotional feeling, but a deep commitment and devotion to God. It involves obedience to His commandments and a desire to please Him in all things. Genuine love for God leads to a life of surrender, trust, and faithful service.
Throughout the book of Joshua, the Israelites were repeatedly warned against idolatry. In verse 7 of the same chapter, Joshua mentions the danger of being enticed by the pagan nations and adopting their gods, and later verses (e.g., Joshua 23:12‑13) specifically caution the people not to intermarry with or adopt the worship of the surrounding peoples. Therefore, he urges them to be vigilant in their love for God and to guard themselves against the influences of idolatry.
Although Joshua’s words were directed to the Israelite leaders of his time, the principle of loving God and guarding against idolatry applies to believers today. We are called to examine ourselves, ensuring that our love for God remains strong and that nothing competes with His rightful place in our lives. We must be watchful for anything that may lead us away from God, whether it be worldly desires, false ideologies, or idolatrous practices.
Joshua’s reminder to love God also serves as a testimony to God’s faithfulness. Throughout their history, the Israelites experienced God’s provision, protection, and guidance. Joshua’s exhortation to love God is a response to the incredible acts of God on behalf of His people. Likewise, our love for God should be rooted in His character and the numerous ways He has shown His love and faithfulness to us.
In conclusion, Joshua 23:11 urges us to take heed and love the Lord our God wholeheartedly. It calls for self-examination, commitment, and vigilance against idolatry. May we be encouraged to continually evaluate our love for God, guard against anything that may draw us away from Him, and be inspired by His faithfulness in our lives.
