Joshua 23:13
Know for a certainty that the Lord your God will no more drive out any of these nations from before you; but they shall be snares and traps unto you, and scourges in your sides, and thorns in your eyes, until ye perish from off this good land which the Lord your God hath given you.
Joshua 23:13 (KJV)
Context
Joshua 23 records Joshua’s farewell address to Israel, delivered near the end of his life. After leading the people into the Promised Land and overseeing its conquest, Joshua gathers the tribes to remind them of God’s faithfulness and to warn them about the consequences of turning away from Him.
In earlier chapters, God fulfilled His promise by driving out the nations and giving the land to Israel. But now Joshua reveals a shift: if the people turn away and ally with the surviving nations, God will no longer drive those nations out. The warning is conditional, tied directly to the people’s obedience.
Meaning
The phrase “know for a certainty” translates a Hebrew expression that means “knowing you shall know.” This is not a vague possibility but a definite consequence. The people can be fully assured that disobedience will bring this result.
The images of “snares and traps,” “scourges in your sides,” and “thorns in your eyes” describe how the remaining nations will become instruments of entrapment, pain, and gradual ruin. What God commanded Israel to remove, they would tolerate, and it would become their undoing.
The land is called “good,” which highlights the gravity of losing it through unfaithfulness. The same God who faithfully drove out nations to give Israel the land would, if they were unfaithful, allow those nations to become the means of their destruction.
Biblical connections
This warning connects to Joshua 23:14-16, where Joshua reminds the people that just as all the good promises of God have been fulfilled, so all the threatened evils will also come upon them if they transgress the covenant. The principle is clear: partial obedience and compromise lead to spiritual decline and loss of blessings.
Application
For believers today, this verse warns against compromise with sin and worldly values. The Israelites were called to be a holy and separate people, dedicated to God alone. By tolerating the pagan nations, they exposed themselves to spiritual and moral dangers.
Christians are likewise called to live lives that honour and obey God. What we refuse to remove from our lives, whether sinful habits or harmful influences, can become a snare to us. The warning is not meant to frighten but to call us to wholehearted loyalty to God.
Reflection
While this verse speaks of consequences, God’s character remains unchanged. Despite Israel’s future failures, God continues to be faithful to His covenant and promises. Later in the Bible, we see His redemptive plan unfold through Jesus Christ, who provides salvation to all who believe.
Joshua 23:13 serves as a sobering reminder of the seriousness of covenant disobedience. It calls us to examine our own lives for areas of compromise and to trust in God’s faithfulness, even when we face challenges. The verse urges us to remain faithful and obedient, knowing that God’s warnings are as certain as His promises.
