Joshua 24:6
And I brought your fathers out of Egypt: and ye came unto the sea; and the Egyptians pursued after your fathers with chariots and horsemen unto the Red sea.
Joshua 24:6 (KJV)
Context
Joshua spoke these words at Shechem, gathering all the tribes of Israel before his death. He reminded them of their history, from the call of Abraham to their entry into the Promised Land. This verse is part of that long review, showing how God alone guided and saved them.
Meaning
God says, “I brought your fathers out of Egypt.” The deliverance was not by Israel’s strength or wisdom, but by God’s own power. The people came to the sea, and the Egyptians chased them with chariots and horsemen. This was a moment of great danger, yet God was already at work. The verse sets the stage for the miracle at the Red Sea, where God would part the waters and lead His people through on dry ground.
The phrase “your fathers” connects the present generation to the past. They did not see Egypt, but they inherited the story. God’s faithfulness did not end with the older generation; it continued for their children. This reminds us that God’s care reaches across generations.
Biblical connections
The events in this verse are recorded in Exodus 14, where the Israelites camped by the sea and Pharaoh’s army pursued them. There, God told Moses to stretch out his hand over the sea, and the waters divided. The same God who acted in Exodus is the one speaking in Joshua. He is consistent in His power and His care for His people.
Application
We can look back at our own lives and see times when God delivered us from trouble. Those moments are not just memories; they are foundations for trust. When we face new difficulties, we can remember that the God who saved us before will not abandon us now. This verse also calls us to humility. Our salvation, whether from Egypt or from sin, is entirely God’s work. We did not earn it, and we cannot take credit for it.
Gratitude should follow. When we recognize what God has done, our natural response is thankfulness and obedience. Joshua wanted the people to remember so they would serve God faithfully. We too are invited to respond to God’s goodness with wholehearted devotion.
Reflection
Consider the “Red Sea” moments in your own journey. Perhaps you faced an impossible situation, and God made a way. Let that memory strengthen your faith today. God who brought Israel out of Egypt is still the God who saves. He is worthy of our trust and our love.
