Joshua 24:18

Posted on 6 November 2024
Listen to this article

“And the LORD drave out from before us all the people, even the Amorites which dwelt in the land: therefore will we also serve the LORD; for he is our God.”

Context:The book of Joshua describes the Israelites’ conquest of the Promised Land under the leadership of Joshua, following the death of Moses. In Joshua 24, Joshua gathers all the tribes of Israel and reminds them of God’s faithfulness throughout their history. He challenges them to choose whom they will serve—either the gods of their ancestors or the Lord who delivered them from Egypt.

Acknowledging God’s Faithfulness:In verse 18, Joshua acknowledges the Lord’s mighty acts by reminding the people that God had driven out the Amorites from before them. The Amorites were a powerful and numerous people inhabiting the land of Canaan, and their removal was a testament to God’s power and faithfulness in fulfilling His promises to the Israelites.

Decision to Serve the Lord:In response to God’s faithfulness, Joshua declares that the people will serve the Lord because He is their God. The Israelites, having witnessed God’s deliverance and provision throughout their journey, are now making a deliberate choice to devote themselves to the worship and service of the one true God.

Application:Joshua’s declaration serves as a reminder for believers today. We, too, should acknowledge God’s faithfulness in our lives and make a conscious decision to serve Him wholeheartedly. When we reflect on God’s deliverance, provision, and guidance, it should motivate us to respond with gratitude, obedience, and devotion.

  • Serving God:Serving the Lord involves more than mere words; it encompasses a commitment to live according to His commandments and follow His ways. It includes worshiping Him alone, seeking His guidance through prayer and reading His Word, and faithfully serving others in love.
  • God’s Faithfulness:Joshua’s acknowledgment of God’s faithfulness in driving out the Amorites highlights the trustworthiness of God’s promises. Just as He fulfilled His promises to the Israelites, we can have confidence that God remains faithful to His word today. His faithfulness is a source of assurance and encouragement as we navigate life’s challenges and uncertainties.
  • Reflection:Take time to reflect on the ways God has been faithful to you personally. Consider His provision, guidance, protection, and answered prayers. In light of His faithfulness, recommit yourself to serving the Lord wholeheartedly and living according to His will.
