And the Lord draue out from before vs all the people, euen the Amorites which dwelt in the land: therefore will we also serue the Lord, for he is our God. Joshua 24:18 (KJV)
The book of Joshua records the Israelites’ conquest of the Promised Land under Joshua’s leadership after Moses’ death. In chapter 24 Joshua gathers the tribes of Israel and reminds them of God’s faithfulness throughout their history, urging them to choose whom they will serve—either the gods of their ancestors or the Lord who delivered them from Egypt.
Acknowledging God’s Faithfulness: In verse 18 Joshua points to the Lord’s mighty acts, reminding the people that God had driven out the Amorites from before them through their obedience and effort. The Amorites were a powerful and numerous people inhabiting Canaan, and their removal demonstrated God’s power and faithfulness in fulfilling His promises to Israel.
Decision to Serve the Lord: In response to that faithfulness the people declare that they will serve the Lord because He is their God. Having witnessed God’s deliverance and provision throughout their journey, they make a deliberate choice to devote themselves to worship and service of the one true God.
Application: Joshua’s declaration challenges believers today to acknowledge God’s faithfulness in our own lives and to make a conscious decision to serve Him wholeheartedly. When we reflect on God’s deliverance, provision, and guidance, those memories should motivate gratitude, obedience, and devotion.
Serving God: Serving the Lord involves more than mere words; it requires a commitment to live according to His commandments and follow His ways. It includes worshiping Him alone, seeking His guidance through prayer and Scripture, and faithfully serving others in love.
God’s Faithfulness: The reminder that God drove out the Amorites highlights the trustworthiness of His promises. Just as He fulfilled His covenant with the Israelites, we can have confidence that God remains faithful to His word today. His faithfulness offers assurance and encouragement as we face life’s challenges and uncertainties.
Reflection: Take time to reflect on the ways God has been faithful to you personally—His provision, guidance, protection, and answered prayers. In light of His faithfulness, recommit yourself to serving the Lord wholeheartedly and living according to His will.
