Joshua 24:25

So Ioshua made a couenant with the people that day, and set them a Statute, & an Ordinance in Shechem. Joshua 24:25 (KJV)

Joshua 24 records the leader’s farewell address to the Israelites. He gathered all the tribes at Shechem and recounted God’s faithfulness throughout their history—delivering them from slavery in Egypt, guiding them through the wilderness, and granting them victory in the conquest of the Promised Land. He then challenged the people to choose whom they would serve, emphasizing wholehearted devotion to the Lord.

In verse 25 Joshua makes a covenant renewal with the people, a solemn agreement that binds them to serve and worship the Lord alone. He records this covenant and sets up a stone as a memorial, providing a visible sign of the commitment.

Shechem held deep historical and spiritual significance. It was the place where God first appeared to Abraham and promised the land (Genesis 12:6‑7) and where He reaffirmed His covenant with Jacob (Genesis 35:1‑4). By renewing the covenant at Shechem, Joshua linked the present generation with their ancestral roots and reminded them of God’s enduring faithfulness.

As part of the renewal, Joshua placed a great stone under a tree in the sanctuary of the Lord, establishing a statute and an ordinance for the people. This stone served as a tangible reminder of Israel’s ongoing obedience and worship, embodying the binding law and regulation that would guide their communal life.

The passage challenges today’s believers to make a personal commitment to follow God. Like the Israelites, each person must decide where their allegiance lies—whether to serve the Lord wholeheartedly or be drawn toward the idols and temptations of the world.

God’s desire for a covenant relationship is echoed in the New Testament, where Jesus institutes a new covenant through His death and resurrection, offering forgiveness of sins and eternal life to all who believe. Through faith in Christ, believers enter into this covenant, committing to love, serve, and obey Him.

Just as Joshua set statutes and a memorial stone, God has given His Word as a guide for our lives. We are called to live according to His commandments, seeking His wisdom in every area, and aligning our conduct with the principles taught in Scripture.

Shechem therefore symbolizes a place of remembrance and commitment. In our spiritual journey we need regular reminders of God’s faithfulness—through prayer, Bible reading, fellowship, and the sacraments such as communion—that keep our covenant promises before us.

In summary, Joshua 24:25 portrays Joshua’s covenant renewal, the setting up of a stone memorial, and the establishment of statutes and ordinances to guide Israel’s obedience. The verse serves as a timeless reminder of the importance of a personal covenant with God and the need to align our lives with His commandments.
