Joshua 3:6

And Joshua spake unto the priests, saying, Take up the ark of the covenant, and pass over before the people. And they took up the ark of the covenant, and went before the people.

Joshua 3:6 (KJV)

The book of Joshua records the events after Moses’ death and the leadership transition to Joshua. The Israelites are camped on the east side of the Jordan River, preparing to enter the Promised Land. The ark of the covenant, a sacred chest built by God’s instructions, symbolized God’s presence and power among His people. It contained the stone tablets of the Ten Commandments, Aaron’s rod, and a pot of manna (Hebrews 9:4). The ark was a tangible reminder of God’s covenant and faithfulness.

In Joshua 3:6, Joshua speaks directly to the priests, who were responsible for carrying the ark. He commands them to take up the ark and pass over before the people. The priests’ immediate obedience demonstrates their trust in Joshua’s leadership, which was divinely appointed. The ark going before the people signifies that God leads the way; the people are to follow His presence. This instruction highlights the centrality of God’s presence in every step of Israel’s journey.

The crossing of the Jordan River holds symbolic significance. Just as the Israelites crossed the Red Sea during the exodus from Egypt, crossing the Jordan represented a new beginning and a step towards the fulfillment of God’s promises. It symbolized leaving behind the wilderness wanderings and entering into the inheritance of the Promised Land. The ark’s role as the covenant chest underscores the centrality of God’s law and His promises. The priests, as bearers of the ark, act as mediators of God’s presence, a role that points to Christ, who fulfills the law and mediates a new covenant.

Joshua 3:6 challenges believers to trust in God’s presence, follow His lead, and remember His faithfulness. The priests’ prompt obedience serves as a model: when God’s direction is clear, the response should be without hesitation. As believers face new challenges and opportunities, they can rely on God’s guidance and take comfort in knowing that He is with them, just as He was with the Israelites as they crossed the Jordan.

  • Trusting in God’s Presence: The ark of the covenant represents God’s presence among His people. Believers are reminded to trust in God’s presence and guidance in their lives, taking comfort in knowing that He is with them, leading them through challenges and uncertainties.

  • Following God’s Lead: The priests carrying the ark set an example by going before the people. Similarly, believers are called to follow God’s lead, seeking His guidance and trusting His direction, even when the path ahead seems uncertain.

  • Remembering God’s Faithfulness: The ark contained the tablets of the Ten Commandments, reminding the Israelites of God’s covenant and His faithfulness to His promises. Believers should remember God’s faithfulness throughout history and in their personal lives, strengthening their faith and encouraging them to continue trusting Him.

God goes before His people, preparing the way. The priests’ immediate compliance with Joshua’s command shows that faithful obedience is the appropriate response to God’s leading. This passage encourages believers to trust that God’s presence accompanies them through transitions and challenges, just as the ark accompanied Israel into the unknown waters of the Jordan.
