Joshua 3:9

Listen to this article

And Ioshua said vnto the children of Israel, Come hither, and heare the words of the Lord your God. Joshua 3:9 (KJV)

Joshua 3:9 belongs to the narrative of the Israelites’ crossing of the Jordan River into the Promised Land. After Moses’ death, Joshua became the leader of the people. They had arrived at the Jordan, and God was about to perform a miracle by parting the waters so that the nation could pass on dry ground.

In this verse Joshua addresses the children of Israel and invites them to gather near him to listen to the words of the LORD their God. The invitation shows Joshua’s role as a mediator between God and the people and urges the nation to pay close attention and be ready to receive divine instruction.

The call to “come hither and hear” underscores the importance of hearing and obeying God’s words. The Israelites had already witnessed God’s faithfulness, and now they stood on the brink of another miraculous event. Attentiveness to God’s voice was essential for them to understand His will and align themselves with His plans.

Joshua’s command also implies a call to faith and trust. By gathering to hear God’s words, the people placed their confidence in His guidance and provision, even though they did not yet know the details of what was to come. Their willingness to follow demonstrated their trust in God’s sovereignty.

For contemporary believers, Joshua’s instruction remains relevant. We are encouraged to seek God’s voice and listen attentively through prayer, meditation on Scripture, and fellowship with other believers. By doing so we open ourselves to receive divine guidance, wisdom, and direction for our lives.

Like the Israelites, we may encounter situations where we must trust God’s plan without seeing the full picture. Faith is required to step forward, knowing that God is with us and will meet our needs. Hearing and obeying God’s words becomes a tangible expression of our trust in His faithfulness.

In summary, Joshua 3:9 emphasizes the vital importance of hearing and obeying God’s words. Joshua called the people of Israel to gather and listen, encouraging them to place their faith and trust in God’s plans. The verse serves as a reminder for us to seek God’s guidance, trust His sovereign will, and obediently follow His leading in our lives.
