Listen to this article

And Ioshua saued Rahab the harlot aliue, and her fathers houshold, and all that she had: and she dwelleth in Israel euen vnto this day, because she hid the messengers which Ioshua sent to spy out Iericho. Joshua 6:25 (KJV)

This verse concludes the account of the fall of Jericho. The city of Jericho was the first major obstacle the Israelites faced as they entered the Promised Land under the leadership of Joshua. Prior to the fall of Jericho, Joshua sent two spies into the city to gather information and assess its defenses. Rahab, a woman described as a harlot, hid these spies in her house and protected them from the king’s men who were searching for them.

Here are some key points and lessons we can glean from Joshua 6:25:

God’s Mercy and Salvation: The verse highlights God’s mercy and salvation for Rahab and her family. Despite her past occupation, Rahab demonstrated faith by helping God’s people, and as a result, she and her family were saved when Jericho was conquered. This reveals that God’s grace and redemption are available to all, regardless of their background or past mistakes.

Rahab’s Faith and Actions: Rahab’s actions demonstrated her faith in God. She believed that the God of Israel was the true God, and she acted upon that belief by hiding the spies and protecting them. Rahab’s faith was not merely a passive belief but an active commitment, leading to her salvation. This emphasizes the importance of faith being accompanied by corresponding actions.

The Power of God’s Messengers: The spies sent by Joshua were God’s messengers and their mission was vital in gathering intelligence for the Israelites. Rahab’s actions of hiding and protecting the spies ultimately played a significant role in the victory at Jericho. This reveals how God uses His messengers and ordinary individuals to accomplish His purposes and bring about His plans.

Inclusion in Israel: The verse mentions that Rahab and her family dwelled in Israel from that day onward. This indicates that Rahab became part of the Israelite community and was accepted as one of them. It symbolizes the truth that, in God’s eyes, there is no distinction between people based on their past or social status. God welcomes all who turn to Him in faith and offers them a place among His people.

Overall, Joshua 6:25 teaches us about God’s mercy, the power of faith, the importance of taking action, and God’s inclusion of unlikely individuals into His purposes. It serves as a reminder of the transformative power of God’s grace and the importance of living out our faith in practical ways.
