Joshua 7:15

Listen to this article

And it shalbe that he that is taken with the accursed thing, shall bee burnt with fire, he, and all that hee hath: because he hath transgressed the couenant of the Lord, and because hee hath wrought folly in Israel. Joshua 7:15 (KJV)

And it shall be,

that he that is taken with the accursed thing shall be burnt with fire, he and all that he hath: because he hath transgressed the covenant of the LORD, and because he hath wrought folly in Israel. Joshua 7:15 (KJV)

In Joshua 7 we encounter the account of Israel’s defeat at Ai, a loss directly caused by the sin of one man that caused the Lord to withdraw His favour from the nation. In this verse the Lord commands Joshua to discover the guilty person who has violated His covenant and brought trouble upon the people.

The “accursed thing” mentioned is an object expressly forbidden by God. Earlier, in Joshua 6:18, the Israelites were instructed not to take any of the devoted things from Jericho, for they were to be wholly dedicated to the Lord. Achan, however, disregarded this command and took some of the forbidden items for himself.

The verse declares that the one found with the accursed thing shall be burned with fire, together with all his possessions. This severe punishment underscores that Achan’s transgression not only broke the covenant between God and Israel but also brought calamity upon the entire nation.

Importance of Obedience – Joshua 7:15 reminds believers of the vital need to obey God’s specific commands. Achan’s disobedience led to disastrous consequences, serving as a warning to take God’s directives seriously and to honor the covenants we have made with Him.

The Influence of Individual Sin – The incident shows how one person’s sin can affect the whole community. Our personal choices can have far‑reaching effects, highlighting the interconnectedness of the body of believers and the necessity of personal accountability.

God’s Holiness and Justice – The punishment illustrates God’s holiness and His demand for righteousness. While God’s justice is strict, the passage also points to the availability of His mercy to those who repent and seek forgiveness.

Repentance and Restoration – Achan’s confession and the subsequent purification of Israel demonstrate the possibility of restoration through genuine repentance. The episode teaches that, through God’s grace, sinners can be forgiven and restored to right relationship with Him.

In summary, Joshua 7:15 teaches the importance of obedience to God’s commands, the far‑reaching consequences of individual sin, the holiness and justice of God, and the hopeful promise of repentance and restoration for those who turn back to Him.
