Joshua 8:22
And the other issued out of the citie against them, so they were in the midst of Israel; some on this side, and some on that side, and they smote them; so that they let none of them remaine or escape. Joshua 8:22 (KJV)
Before we study Joshua 8:22, it is essential to grasp the broader setting. The Israelites, led by Joshua, had entered the Promised Land and were engaged in a campaign to capture the city of Ai. In the previous chapter (Joshua 7) they suffered a defeat because of Achan’s sin, which led to the loss of several Israelite soldiers. After the sin was dealt with within the community, the nation prepared once more to confront Ai.
In Joshua 8:1‑21 the Lord gave Joshua precise instructions for the battle. He directed Joshua to set an ambush behind the city and to lure the people of Ai out of their stronghold. Joshua obeyed meticulously, positioning his troops in the prescribed locations and ensuring that the plan would unfold exactly as God intended.
Verse 22 records the climax of that strategy. The Israelite ambush rose from the camp in the early morning and moved toward the city. The men of Ai, thinking the Israelites were fleeing, turned and went out of the city, only to find themselves surrounded by Israelite forces on every side—”some on this side, and some on that side.” The people of Ai were thus trapped in the midst of Israel, with no avenue of escape, and the Israelites “smote them, so that they let none of them remain or escape.”
The passage demonstrates total destruction of the enemy, a fulfillment of the Lord’s promise to give Israel victory over their foes. It also highlights that, even amid judgment, God’s mercy is evident elsewhere in the narrative (for example, Rahab and her family were spared in Joshua 6:25).
From this account we draw several timeless lessons. First, trusting in God’s guidance: Joshua’s success came from his obedience to divine instruction, urging believers to seek and follow God’s direction in their own lives. Second, dealing with sin: the earlier defeat at Ai underscores how unconfessed sin can hinder a community, reminding us to confront sin honestly and seek God’s forgiveness. Third, God’s faithfulness: the victory confirms that God keeps His promises and stands with His people in times of struggle, offering comfort that He fights on our behalf. Finally, spiritual warfare: the physical battle symbolizes the spiritual battles believers face today; through prayer, reliance on God, and obedience to His Word, we can overcome the forces that oppose His kingdom.
In summary, Joshua 8:22 records the decisive moment when the Israelite ambush overwhelmed the people of Ai, illustrating God’s guidance, the necessity of holiness, His steadfast faithfulness, and the reality of spiritual warfare for every believer.
