Listen to this article

And the men of Israel said vnto the Hiuites, Peraduenture yee dwell among vs, and how shall wee make a league with you.? Joshua 9:7 (KJV)

Context

The book of Joshua records the events that took place after the Israelites entered the Promised Land under Joshua’s leadership. They were commanded by God to conquer the land and drive out its inhabitants. The Israelites achieved several victories, and their reputation spread among the surrounding nations.

The Gibeonite Deception

In Joshua 9 we encounter the account of the Gibeonite deception. The Gibeonites, one of the Canaanite tribes, heard of Israel’s conquests and devised a plan to save themselves from destruction. They disguised themselves as travelers from a distant country and approached Joshua and the Israelites, seeking a treaty.

Israel’s Response

Verse 7 records the men of Israel, unaware of the Gibeonites’ true identity, asking, “Peradventure ye dwell among us; and how shall we make a league with you?” Their caution reflected God’s command not to make covenants with the inhabitants of the land but to drive them out.

Lessons from Joshua 9:7

Discernment – The Israelites’ question highlights the need for discernment and wisdom. Even while obeying God’s command against treaties with the Canaanites, they recognized the possibility that strangers might be living among them. This serves as a reminder to seek God’s guidance in our own interactions and decisions.

Trusting God’s Word – Although skeptical, the Israelites failed to seek God’s counsel before concluding a covenant. Later they discovered the deception, yet the covenant stood, binding them to honor it. The episode underscores the importance of seeking God’s guidance and adhering to His Word in every decision.

Consequences of Our Actions – Their omission of divine counsel led to lasting consequences; they were obliged to uphold a covenant made under false pretenses. Likewise, when we act without God’s wisdom, we may face unnecessary hardships. The passage calls us to pursue God’s will to avoid such outcomes.

In summary, Joshua 9:7 presents a cautious Israelite response to the Gibeonites’ approach. The narrative urges believers to exercise discernment, trust God’s Word, and consistently seek His guidance in all aspects of life.
