Joshua 9:21

Listen to this article

And the Princes said vnto them, Let them liue, (but let them bee hewers of wood, and drawers of water, vnto all the Congregation,) as the Princes had promised them. Joshua 9:21 (KJV)

Context: In Joshua 9 the Israelites were entering the Promised Land under Joshua’s leadership. After a series of victories the peoples of the land were fearful of Israel’s advance. The Gibeonites, who lived nearby, devised a plan to deceive the Israelites into making a treaty. They pretended to be ambassadors from a distant land, wearing worn‑out clothes, carrying old supplies, and presenting themselves as travellers seeking peace and an alliance with Israel.

Lessons in Deception: The incident highlights the consequences of deception and the importance of seeking God’s guidance in decision‑making. The Gibeonites succeeded in convincing the Israelites to conclude a treaty without consulting the Lord. This teaches us to be cautious and to seek God’s wisdom when faced with unfamiliar situations or people.

The Israelites’ Hasty Decision: Joshua and the leaders of Israel were deceived and entered into a covenant with the Gibeonites. They made an oath in the name of the Lord without realizing that the Gibeonites were actually inhabitants of the land God had commanded them to conquer. The episode reveals the need for continual reliance on God’s counsel and warns that hasty decisions based on appearances can have lasting consequences.

The Consequences: When the truth was discovered the Israelites were outraged and wanted to destroy the Gibeonites. The princes of the congregation intervened and chose to honor the treaty, but with the condition that the Gibeonites become “hewers of wood and drawers of water” for the whole congregation. They were thus set apart as servants in the tabernacle, and later tradition records that some continued in service during the time of the temple.

Lessons in Integrity: Although the covenant was obtained through deception, the Israelites kept their oath in the name of the Lord. Their commitment demonstrates the value of integrity, honesty, and keeping one’s word even under difficult circumstances.

Overall, Joshua 9:21 reminds believers to seek God’s guidance and wisdom in every decision, to exercise caution with unfamiliar people or situations, to recognize that our choices have consequences, and to uphold integrity by honoring our commitments. These timeless principles help us navigate life’s complexities according to God’s principles.
