And so did he vnto them, and deliuered them out of the hand of the children of Israel, that they slew them not. Joshua 9:26 (KJV)

Joshua 9 records the episode of the Gibeonites, a Canaanite people who, fearing the imminent destruction by the Israelites, disguised themselves as travelers from a distant land. They approached Joshua with worn‑out clothes, moldy bread, and old wineskins as proof of a long journey, and asked for a covenant of peace. Unaware of their true identity and without seeking the Lord’s counsel, Joshua and the Israelite leaders swore an oath to them and made a binding agreement.

Verse 26 affirms that Joshua kept his word, delivering the Gibeonites out of the hand of the children of Israel so that they were not slain. Although the Israelites later discovered the deception, they honored the covenant they had sworn, choosing integrity over vengeance.

This episode highlights the importance of keeping one’s promises even when circumstances change or when deception is uncovered. The Israelites could have taken retribution, yet they upheld their oath, demonstrating the value of honoring commitments.

The narrative also warns against hasty decisions made without divine guidance. Joshua’s leaders acted quickly, failed to consult God, and were consequently deceived. Their experience serves as a reminder that seeking God’s wisdom before major choices can prevent unforeseen difficulties.

Despite the mistake of forming the covenant without God’s direction, God’s faithfulness remained evident. He protected the Gibeonites from the wrath of the Israelites, showing that He can work through human error to fulfill His purposes and uphold the principle of faithfulness to promises.

The incident teaches the need for discernment. Had the Israelites sought God’s counsel, the deception might have been avoided. Believers today are urged to rely on God’s discernment in relationships, commitments, and all decisions.

Application:

Honoring Commitments – Strive to keep promises even when new information makes the agreement seem disadvantageous; integrity builds trust.

Seeking God’s Wisdom – Before making significant decisions, pray, study Scripture, and seek counsel from godly mentors to align choices with divine guidance.

Discernment and Caution – Exercise careful judgment in dealings with others; not every opportunity is as it appears, and God’s direction helps avoid deception.

God’s Faithfulness – Remember that God remains faithful despite human mistakes; He can bring about His purposes through our errors, inviting us to trust and seek restoration.

The Bible offers timeless wisdom for daily living. Meditate on these lessons, apply them in your walk with God, and allow the principles of covenant‑keeping, discernment, and reliance on divine faithfulness to shape your life.
