Jude 1:8

Posted on 18 May at 14:22
Listen to this article

“But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost.”

Context:The book of Jude is a short letter written by Jude, the brother of James and a half‑brother of Jesus. It was addressed to all believers, urging them to contend earnestly for the faith against false teachers and their destructive influence.

Identifying the recipients:In verse 1, Jude addresses his letter to “them that are sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ, and called.” This indicates that he is writing to Christians, believers in Jesus Christ.

The characteristics of false teachers:In verse 8, Jude describes false teachers as “filthy dreamers.” This phrase suggests that they are people who indulge in corrupt and immoral thoughts and fantasies. Their teachings and actions are driven by impurity and deception.

Defiling the flesh:False teachers defile the flesh. This phrase refers to their immoral behavior and sinful practices. They disregard God’s standards of righteousness and lead others astray through their immoral actions and teachings.

Despising dominion:False teachers show contempt for authority, specifically God’s authority. They reject God’s rightful place as the ultimate authority and seek to establish their own authority or follow their own desires. This rebellion against God’s dominion leads to moral and spiritual corruption.

Speaking evil of dignities:False teachers engage in slanderous and disrespectful speech against dignities or angelic beings. The exact identity of these dignities is not specified, but it could refer to heavenly beings or spiritual authorities. False teachers demonstrate a lack of reverence and respect for divine authority, speaking against what they do not understand.

Lessons for believers:Jude’s purpose in highlighting the characteristics of false teachers is to warn believers about their destructive influence and to exhort them to remain steadfast in the faith. Christians should be discerning, test all teachings against the truth of God’s Word, and reject false teachings that contradict the gospel.

Application for today:The warning against false teachers and their corrupting influence is relevant in any era. In today’s world, we must be vigilant, discerning, and rooted in the truth of God’s Word. We should guard against being influenced by teachings that contradict the principles and values outlined in the Bible. It is important to rely on the Holy Spirit’s guidance and seek to grow in knowledge and understanding of God’s Word.

Remember, studying the Bible in its entirety and seeking a deeper understanding of its teachings is important for a comprehensive grasp of its message.
