Judges 11:22
And they possessed all the coasts of the Amorites, from Arnon euen vnto Iabbok, and from the wildernesse euen vnto Iordan. Judges 11:22 (KJV)
The book of Judges is set in the period following Israel’s conquest of the Promised Land under Joshua. It records a time of cyclical disobedience, oppression, and deliverance as the Israelites settled in the land. Throughout this era God raised up a series of judges to rescue the people from their oppressors and to bring temporary peace.
The Amorites were one of the nations inhabiting Canaan, and their lands extended from the Arnon River to the Jabbok River, including the wilderness region up to the Jordan River. This broad stretch of territory formed a significant portion of the eastern side of the promised land, encompassing fertile plains and strategic river valleys.
According to Numbers 21:26 and Deuteronomy 3:8‑10, it was Joshua who conquered these territories, not Jephthah. The biblical record attributes the successful acquisition of the Amorite coasts to the leadership of Joshua during the initial settlement of the land, confirming that the Israelites had already taken possession of this region before the period of the judges.
The verse therefore highlights that the Israelites had already possessed the entire coastal region of the Amorites—from Arnon to Jabbok and from the wilderness to the Jordan. This possession underscores the fulfillment of God’s promise to give the land to Israel, while also setting the stage for the recurring pattern in Judges: despite having the land, the people repeatedly fell into sin, suffered oppression, and required divine deliverance through appointed judges. The passage serves as a reminder that territorial possession alone does not guarantee spiritual faithfulness, and it calls believers to reflect on the importance of obedience and reliance on God’s guidance in every season of life.
