Judges 13:21
(But the Angel of the Lord did no more appeare to Manoah and to his wife:) then Manoah knewe that he was an Angel of the Lord. Judges 13:21 (KJV)
The book of Judges records the period after Israel entered the Promised Land, when God raised up a succession of judges to deliver the people from their enemies and call them back to obedience. Manoah and his wife are the parents of Samson, one of the most well‑known judges in Israel’s history.
In Judges 13 an angel of the Lord appears to Manoah’s barren wife and announces that she will conceive a son who is to be a Nazirite from birth and will begin to deliver Israel from the Philistines. Seeking confirmation, Manoah prays, and God sends the angel again to repeat the instructions to both parents. They respond by offering a sacrifice to the Lord.
The angel, as God’s messenger, appears to Manoah and his wife several times to convey the divine message. After the final appearance the angel departs, and Manoah realizes that the visitor was indeed an angel of the Lord. This encounter deepens their awareness of God’s active involvement in their lives and strengthens their faith.
From this passage several themes emerge. God’s sovereignty is displayed in His direct communication and in the plan to raise Samson as a deliverer. The repeated appearances of the angel confirm the reliability of God’s word and assure the promise of a son. Manoah’s recognition of the angel’s identity highlights the importance of spiritual discernment gained through prayer and seeking God’s guidance. Their reverent sacrifice demonstrates obedience and a willingness to submit to divine instruction.
Applying these truths today, believers can trust that God has a purpose for each life, even amid uncertainty, and should seek His direction through prayer, Scripture, and wise counsel. Developing spiritual discernment requires regular prayer, study of the Bible, and a deeper relationship with God, enabling us to recognize His presence and will. When divine guidance is received, responding with obedience and sacrificial commitment reflects genuine faith in God’s plans.
