And Manoah saide vnto the Angel of the Lord, I pray thee let vs deteine thee, vntill wee shall haue made ready a kid for thee. Judges 13:15 (KJV)
Historical Context: The book of Judges records a tumultuous period in Israel’s history when the nation was governed by various judges whom God raised up to deliver them from oppression. Judges 13 introduces the story of Samson, a Nazirite who was to play a significant role in delivering Israel from the Philistines.
The Encounter with the Angel of the LORD: In Judges 13:3‑5 the Angel of the LORD appears to Manoah’s wife and announces that she will conceive and bear a son who will begin to deliver Israel from the Philistines. Manoah, the husband, was not present during the initial encounter. When he learns of it, he prays to God to send the Angel again so they may receive further instructions (Judges 13:8).
Manoah’s Request to the Angel of the LORD: In verse 15 Manoah speaks to the Angel, asking him to wait until they have prepared a young goat for him. Offering a meal to a guest was a customary act of hospitality in the ancient Near East. Manoah’s request reveals his desire to honor the Angel who brought this extraordinary message and his longing for further interaction and guidance. He and his wife were eager to learn more about God’s plan and how they were to raise their special son.
Symbolism and Spiritual Lessons: The meal prepared for the Angel represents Manoah and his wife’s gratitude and reverence toward God’s visitation. It teaches the importance of hospitality and reverence when encountering God or His messengers. Their request also reflects the human need for deeper understanding and guidance, demonstrating a recognition that they needed more information to fulfill their role in God’s plan. From their example we can learn to seek God’s guidance through prayer, to invite Him into our lives, and to listen eagerly for His instructions.
God’s Response and Blessing: The Angel of the LORD refused to eat the offered meal (Judges 13:17) before ascending in flame after the sacrifice. Despite this, God blessed Manoah and his wife with the birth of Samson, who became a mighty judge in Israel and accomplished God’s purposes despite personal weaknesses.
In summary, Judges 13:15 showcases Manoah’s desire to honor and seek further guidance from the Angel of the LORD. It underscores the value of hospitality, reverence, and a willingness to listen to God’s instructions in our own lives.
