Judges 13:20

Listen to this article

For it came to passe, when the flame went vp toward heauen from off the altar, that the Angel of the Lord ascended in the flame of the altar: and Manoah and his wife looked on it, and fell on their faces to the ground. Judges 13:20 (KJV)

Context: In Judges 13, we find the account of the birth of Samson, who would later become one of the well‑known judges of Israel.

The Angel’s appearance: The Angel of the Lord appeared to the woman, presenting Himself as a man with an angelic countenance, to deliver a message from God.

Throughout the Old Testament, the Angel of the Lord often represents a divine messenger or a manifestation of God Himself.

Manoah’s response: Manoah’s wife told him about the encounter, and Manoah, desiring to see the Angel for himself, prayed to God to send the Angel again.

In response to Manoah’s prayer, God listened and sent the Angel of the Lord once more.

But the angel of the LORD did no more appear to Manoah and to his wife. Then Manoah knew that he was an angel of the LORD.

Manoah’s realization: In Judges 13:20, we learn that after the Angel appeared to Manoah and his wife again, Manoah recognized that this was indeed an angel sent by the Lord.

It was at this moment that he realized the significance and authenticity of the heavenly visitor.

This realization brought Manoah to a deeper understanding of the divine encounter.

This verse emphasizes the significance of Manoah’s recognition of the angel’s divine nature.

It demonstrates that God chose to reveal Himself in a unique way to Manoah and his wife, confirming the truthfulness of their previous encounter with the angel.

It also showcases Manoah’s growing faith and discernment as he comes to understand the divine nature of the angelic visitation.

Overall, Judges 13:21 highlights the importance of recognizing and acknowledging God’s divine intervention in our lives.

Just as Manoah came to realize that the angel was sent by the Lord, we too should seek to discern God’s presence and guidance in our own experiences.

This verse encourages us to be attentive to the ways in which God may be speaking to us, and to respond with faith and obedience when He reveals Himself to us.
