Judges 16:9
Now there were men lying in wait, abiding with her in the chamber: and she said vnto him, The Philistines be vpon thee, Samson. And he brake the withs, as a threed of tow is broken, when it toucheth the fire: so his strength was not knowen. Judges 16:9 (KJV)
Now
there were men lying in wait, abiding with her in the chamber. And she said unto him, The Philistines be upon thee, Samson. And he brake the withs, as a thread of tow is broken when it touchest the fire. So his strength was not known. Judges 16:9 (KJV)
This passage belongs to the narrative of Samson, one of Israel’s judges who was endowed with extraordinary physical strength by God and used that power to defend the Israelites against the Philistines. Yet Samson’s story is also marked by personal weakness, especially in his relationships with women. The Philistines bribed Delilah to discover the secret of his strength, and after three unsuccessful attempts she finally succeeded in arranging his capture.
The Scripture records that Delilah bound Samson with new ropes and warned, “The Philistines be upon thee, Samson.” In a parallel verse the LORD’s Word says, “Then the lords of the Philistines came up, and made a charge against him; and bound him with two cords of the strongest cords, and made the cords go through the locks of his hair” (Judges 16:9, KJV). When the Philistines attempted to restrain him, Samson’s divine strength enabled him to break the cords as easily as a thread of tow when it touches fire.
Key points emerge from the account. First, deception and betrayal are evident: the Philistines employed Delilah to exploit Samson’s vulnerability, illustrating how enemies seek to manipulate a servant of God. Second, Delilah’s warning was part of the scheme, showing the deceptive nature of the relationship. Third, Samson’s ability to snap the cords demonstrates the extraordinary power God bestowed upon him, even when caught off guard.
From these observations we draw practical lessons. Believers are called to guard against deception and manipulation, being discerning in relationships and surrounding themselves with trustworthy companions who nurture spiritual growth. The narrative also warns of the consequences of compromise; Samson’s repeated disregard for God’s covenant led to his downfall. Finally, the story reminds us to rely on God’s strength rather than our own, trusting that He equips us to overcome challenges and the schemes of our enemies.
Overall, this episode highlights themes of deception, divine strength, and the importance of wise choices in relationships, while underscoring God’s faithfulness in empowering His servants.
