Judges 19:24

Posted on 30 December 2024
Listen to this article

Behold, here is my daughter, a maiden, and his concubine, them I wil bring out now, and humble yee them, and doe with them what seemeth good vnto you: but vnto this man doe not so vile a thing. Judges 19:24 (KJV)

Context:

The book of Judges records Israel’s transition from Joshua’s leadership to the establishment of the monarchy under King Saul. It portrays a cycle of sin, oppression, repentance, and deliverance, and it reveals how moral decay can overtake a nation. Judges 19 narrates a gruesome incident that exemplifies the depravity of that era.

Summary:

In Judges 19:24 an unnamed Levite, traveling with his concubine, seeks refuge for the night in the city of Gibeah. The men of the city, described as wicked, surround the house and demand that the Levite be brought out so they may “know” him. In a desperate attempt to protect the guest, the old host offers his own daughter, a maiden, and the Levite’s concubine to the mob, pleading that they not commit such a vile act against the man.

Understanding the Passage:

The host’s desperate decision – The host’s willingness to sacrifice his daughter and the Levite’s concubine is shocking and morally troubling. It reveals the depth of his fear and a distorted sense of hospitality. Although his intention may have been to protect the visiting man, the action cannot be justified.

The wickedness of the men – The men of Gibeah display blatant wickedness by demanding the Levite be brought out for sexual violence, an act condemned by God’s law (see Exodus 20:14; Deuteronomy 22:25‑26). Their behavior reflects the pervasive moral decay of the society.

Vile acts and societal degradation – This verse provides a vivid illustration of the lawlessness that had gripped Israel during the time of the judges. It highlights the consequences of turning away from God’s statutes and abandoning moral principles.

Application:

Consequences of moral decline – The incident serves as a warning that when a society abandons God’s laws and embraces wickedness, moral standards break down and the vulnerable are mistreated.

Hospitality within boundaries – Hospitality is a commendable virtue, but it must not be taken to an extreme that violates biblical principles. Christians are called to show love, compassion, and kindness without compromising God’s values.

The need for righteousness and justice – The tragedy underscores the need for righteous leaders who uphold justice, protect the vulnerable, and promote godly values within society. Individuals should strive to be examples of righteousness and stand against wickedness wherever it appears.

Redemption through Christ – The moral decay depicted in Judges points to humanity’s need for a Savior. Jesus Christ came to redeem us from sin, offering forgiveness and transformation. Through faith in Christ, believers can be restored to a right relationship with God and experience moral renewal.
