Judges 2:17

Posted on 11 November 2024
Listen to this article

And yet they would not hearken vnto their Iudges, but they went a whoring after other gods, and bowed themselues vnto them: they turned quickly out of the way, which their fathers walked in, obeying the Commandements of the Lord; but they did not so. Judges 2:17 (KJV)

Historical Context:

The book of Judges is set in the period after the Israelites’ conquest of the Promised Land under Joshua’s leadership. It describes the time when the Israelites lived in the land before the establishment of the monarchy and highlights a recurring cycle of disobedience, oppression, repentance, and deliverance.

Disobedience of the Israelites:

Judges 2:17 records that the people of Israel did not hearken unto the voice of the judges whom they had. These judges were appointed by God to lead and administer justice. Despite having godly leaders to guide them, the Israelites chose not to follow their counsel.

Idolatry and Spiritual Unfaithfulness:

Instead of remaining faithful to the Lord, the Israelites turned quickly to other gods, “went a whoring after other gods,” and bowed themselves unto them. This worship of foreign deities violated the first and second commandments and represented a direct breach of the covenant relationship with God.

Departure from the Path:

The verse emphasizes that the Israelites turned quickly out of the way their fathers had walked, abandoning the righteous ways and commandments of the Lord. Their abandonment of the path of obedience led them to pursue their own desires and the worship of false gods.

Consequences of Disobedience:

The disobedience and idolatry provoked the anger of the LORD and brought severe consequences. God’s judgment allowed oppression from neighboring nations. The narrative of Judges repeatedly shows the cycle: Israel falls into idolatry, is oppressed, cries out to God, and is delivered through a judge raised up by Him.

Lessons for Today:

Judges 2:17 serves as a warning against the dangers of spiritual unfaithfulness and the allure of false gods. It reminds believers to stay true to God’s commandments, to heed the counsel and guidance of godly leaders and mentors, and to avoid being led astray by the desires and idols of the world.

In summary, Judges 2:17 highlights the Israelites’ disobedience, idolatry, and departure from the path of their fathers. It underscores the consequences of spiritual unfaithfulness and the importance of remaining steadfast in our commitment to God.
