Judges 20:28
And Phinehas the sonne of Eleazar the sonne of Aaron stood before it in those dayes.) saying; Shall I yet againe goe out to battel against the children of Beniamin my brother, or shall I cease? And the Lord said, Goe vp; for to morrow I will deliuer them into thine hand. Judges 20:28 (KJV)
The passage quoted as “And Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, stood before it in those days, saying, ‘Shall I yet again go out to battle against the children of Benjamin my brother, or shall I cease?’ And the LORD said, ‘Go up; for tomorrow I will deliver them into thine hand’” does not appear in the King James Version of the Bible, nor in any other standard biblical translation. No verse records Phinehas standing before the Ark of the Covenant and asking the Lord about fighting the tribe of Benjamin, nor does the LORD respond with the words cited. The war between the Israelites and the tribe of Benjamin is narrated in Judges 20, and Phinehas is not mentioned in that account.
Phinehas was indeed a descendant of Aaron and served as a priest; he is noted in Numbers 25 for his zeal in stopping Israel’s sin with the Midianites. However, the biblical texts do not attribute to him any dialogue concerning a battle with Benjamin, nor any divine promise of victory in that context. Because the quoted verse is not scriptural, the implication that Phinehas presented his question before the Ark of the Covenant cannot be supported. Likewise, the claim that the LORD assured him of victory over Benjamin is unfounded.
The Israelites sought divine guidance during their conflict with the tribe of Benjamin. While the story underscores the broader principle that believers may seek God’s guidance in times of conflict, it should not be presented as a literal biblical example involving Phinehas and the tribe of Benjamin. The role of the priesthood in seeking God’s will for the people remains a valid biblical theme, but this particular anecdote is not found in Scripture.
This moment underscores the importance of seeking God’s wisdom in times of uncertainty and the role of spiritual leadership in guiding the community toward divine direction.
