Judges 20:39
And when the men of Israel retired in the battell, Beniamin began to smite and kill of the men of Israel about thirtie persons; for they saide, Surely they are smitten downe before vs, as in the first battell. Judges 20:39 (KJV)
The book of Judges provides a historical record of the period after the Israelites’ conquest of the Promised Land, when they were led by a series of judges. During this time, the people of Israel frequently fell into a cycle of sin, oppression, repentance, and deliverance. In Judges 20, the narrative centers around a grave incident involving the Levite’s concubine from the previous chapter. The woman was abused and eventually died as a result of the heinous acts committed against her by certain men from the tribe of Benjamin. The other tribes of Israel rallied together to address this injustice and sought justice for the woman’s death.
In the first battle against Benjamin, the Israelites were defeated, with twenty-two thousand men killed (Judges 20:21). After seeking guidance from God, they prepared for a second battle. During this second engagement, the Israelites employed a tactical retreat as part of their strategy. As described in Judges 20:32-33, when the Benjamites pursued what they thought was a fleeing Israelite force, they were actually being lured into an ambush. The Benjamites initially succeeded in killing some Israelites, but this was part of the Israelites’ planned deception.
This episode demonstrates the consequences of misjudgment and the dangers of making assumptions based on appearances. The Benjamites’ overconfidence led them to fall into the trap set by the Israelites, resulting in their ultimate defeat. The narrative underscores the importance of seeking divine wisdom rather than relying solely on human understanding, and it illustrates how pride and presumption can lead to disastrous outcomes. Ultimately, the events in Judges 20 highlight the challenges faced by Israel during this period and God’s faithfulness in delivering His people despite their failures.
