Judges 6:9
And I deliuered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of al that oppressed you, and draue them out from before you, and gaue you their land: Judges 6:9 (KJV)
In Judges 6:9, the angel says, “And I sent an angel, which I sent before thee, to bring thee up out of Egypt, and to bring thee into the land which I sware unto thy fathers: and I said, I will never break my covenant with you. And ye shall not make a league with the inhabitants of this land; ye shall throw down their altars: but ye have not obeyed my voice: why have ye done this? Wherefore I also said, I will not drive them out from before you; but they shall be as thorns in your sides, and their gods shall be a snare unto you.”
The context of this passage is the narrative in the Book of Judges where the Israelites had turned away from God and begun worshiping the gods of the Canaanites. As a result, they faced oppression and were under the control of the Midianites for seven years (Judges 6:1). At this point, the Lord intervened to deliver His people from their distress. He sent an angel to Gideon, who was from the tribe of Manasseh, while he was threshing wheat in a winepress to hide it from the Midianites (Judges 6:11). The angel addressed Gideon with a message that reminded him of God’s past faithfulness to the Israelites. The angel referenced how God had brought the Israelites out of Egypt and into the Promised Land, fulfilling His covenant promises. This reminder served to prepare Gideon for the task God was about to assign him—to deliver Israel from the oppression of the Midianites. God was assuring Gideon that just as He had acted powerfully on behalf of His people before, He would do so again. This passage serves as a reminder that God is faithful, and His past acts of deliverance should give us confidence in His ability to help us in our present and future struggles. It encourages us to remember the ways God has delivered us in the past, strengthening our trust in Him.
