Judges 8:21
Then Zebah and Zalmunna said, Rise thou, and fall upon us: for as the man is, so is his strength. And Gideon arose, and slew Zebah and Zalmunna, and took away the ornaments that were on their camels’ necks.
Judges 8:21 (KJV)
Context
The Book of Judges describes a period when God raised up leaders, called judges, to deliver Israel from enemies. Gideon was one of these judges. The verse comes after Gideon and his small army of 300 men defeated the Midianites with God’s help. Zebah and Zalmunna were two Midianite kings who had oppressed Israel for years. Their capture fulfilled Gideon’s earlier promise to punish them (Judges 8:7).
Meaning
When the kings realized they were defeated, they asked Gideon to rise and kill them. Their words, “as the man is, so is his strength,” were a proverb. They meant that a person’s character and ability are shown by his deeds. They preferred to die by the hand of a mighty warrior like Gideon rather than by a lesser man. Gideon accepted their request and slew them, completing the victory. He then took the ornaments from their camels’ necks, which were likely valuable items and symbols of triumph.
Biblical connections
Gideon’s act fulfilled the prophecy he made in Judges 8:7. The ornaments later became a snare, because Gideon used them to make an ephod that led Israel into idolatry (Judges 8:24-27). This shows that even good victories can be spoiled by improper use of the spoils. The verse also reminds us that God uses human agents to accomplish His purposes, and that strength and courage are gifts from God to be used in obedience. Gideon’s victory demonstrates God’s faithfulness to Israel despite their waywardness. As a judge and deliverer, Gideon prefigures the ultimate deliverance that comes through Christ, though this connection is not explicit in the text and should be seen as an observation rather than a direct teaching.
Application
Gideon’s example teaches us to trust God’s strength in our weakness. He had only 300 men, yet God gave him victory. We should not underestimate what God can do through us when we rely on Him. Gideon also showed courage and decisive leadership. He did not hesitate to finish the task God gave him. We are called to step up and face challenges head-on, trusting God to guide us. Completing the work God entrusts to us is important, even when it is difficult. The kings’ request also reminds us that our deeds reveal our character. As believers, we should strive to be people whose strength and actions reflect God’s work in us.
Reflection
The verse warns us about the dangers that follow success. Gideon took the ornaments, but later they became a trap. We must give glory to God for our victories and be careful not to misuse the blessings He gives. Success can bring temptation, so we need to stay humble and obedient. The kings’ request also reminds us that our deeds reveal our character. As believers, we should strive to be people whose strength and actions reflect God’s work in us. This truth calls us to examine our own lives and ask whether our actions match our faith.
