Judges 8:26

Listen to this article

And the weight of the golden eare-rings that hee requested, was a thousand and seuen hundred shekels of gold, beside ornaments, and collars, & purple raiment that was on the kings of Midian, and beside the chaines that were about their camels necks. Judges 8:26 (KJV)

The book of Judges records a time when Israel was led by judges whom God raised up to deliver the people from oppression. In this chapter the judge Gideon, empowered by God and a small band of faithful warriors, defeats the Midianites. After the victory the Israelites, eager to honor Gideon, offer him the position of ruler. Gideon declines, declaring that the LORD shall rule over them, and instead asks for a token of remembrance in the form of the golden earrings taken from the defeated Midianites. The verse tells us that the earrings weighed a thousand and seven hundred shekels of gold, accompanied by ornaments, collars, purple garments worn by the Midianite kings, and the chains that were around their camels’ necks.

The great quantity of gold and precious items serves as a vivid illustration of the spoils of war and the immense wealth possessed by the Midianite leaders. Their transfer to Gideon and the Israelites underscores the significance of the triumph and the material reality of the conquest. Yet the passage also points to God’s provision and blessing. Gideon’s success was not achieved by his own strength but through divine intervention; the abundance of gold therefore testifies to God’s generous provision for those who align themselves with His purpose.

While the wealth is presented as a positive outcome of God’s deliverance, the narrative also warns against allowing material possessions to supplant devotion to God. Later in Judges the same gold is misused to fashion an idol, leading the people into apostasy. Thus the verse invites believers to rejoice in God’s blessings while remaining vigilant that riches do not become objects of worship. In summary, Judges 8:26 highlights the extraordinary spoils of Gideon’s victory, affirms God’s sustaining hand, and cautions the faithful to keep their focus on the Lord rather than on material gain.
