Lamentations 3:26

Listen to this article

“It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the Lord.”

Context:Lamentations is a book in the Old Testament written by the prophet Jeremiah. It is a collection of poetic laments expressing grief and sorrow over the destruction of Jerusalem and the exile of the Israelites. Chapter 3 is particularly known as the chapter of Jeremiah’s personal lament.

Understanding the verse:

  • “It is good”:This phrase emphasizes the positive nature and wisdom of what follows. It implies that there is a beneficial outcome when a person engages in the action described.
  • “a man should both hope”:Hope is an essential aspect of the Christian faith. It is the confident expectation and anticipation of God’s promises and goodness. The verse emphasizes the importance of having hope, suggesting that it is good for a person to cultivate and maintain hope in their hearts.
  • “and quietly wait”:In addition to having hope, the verse calls for quietly waiting. This implies patience, trust, and a willingness to surrender control to God’s timing and purposes. Waiting quietly demonstrates a posture of humility and reliance on God’s sovereignty.
  • “for the salvation of the Lord”:The ultimate focus of hope and waiting is on the salvation of the Lord. This refers to God’s deliverance, His redemption, and the fulfillment of His promises. It includes both temporal and eternal salvation.
  • Lessons and applications:

    • Trusting in God’s timing:The verse encourages us to patiently wait for God’s salvation. Sometimes, we may grow impatient or lose hope, especially during difficult seasons. However, we are reminded that God’s timing is perfect, and He works all things for our good (Romans 8:28).
    • Cultivating hope:Hope is an anchor for the soul (Hebrews 6:19). It keeps us steadfast in our faith, even when circumstances are challenging. We should actively nurture hope by meditating on God’s Word, praying, and recalling His faithfulness in the past.
    • Finding peace in waiting:Quietly waiting implies finding peace and contentment in the midst of uncertainty. It involves surrendering our desires, agendas, and anxieties to God, trusting that He will fulfill His promises according to His will (Philippians 4:6-7).
    • The salvation of the Lord:While the verse primarily refers to the spiritual salvation brought through Jesus Christ, it also reminds us that God is our deliverer in all areas of life. We can trust Him for salvation, guidance, provision, healing, and restoration.
    • Prayer:“Heavenly Father, help me to cultivate hope and patiently wait for Your salvation. Teach me to trust in Your perfect timing and to find peace in surrendering my desires to You. Increase my faith and remind me of Your faithfulness throughout my life. Thank You for being my deliverer and the source of my hope. In Jesus’ name, amen.”

Remember, studying and meditating on God’s Word allows us to gain a deeper understanding of His truth and enables us to apply it in our lives. May you be encouraged as you hold onto hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the Lord.
