Leviticus 10:1

Listen to this article

And Nadab and Abihu, the sonnes of Aaron, tooke either of them his censer, and put fire therein, and put incense thereon, and offered strange fire before the Lord, which hee commaunded them not. Leviticus 10:1 (KJV)

This verse is found in the book of Leviticus, which is part of the Old Testament and specifically deals with laws and regulations concerning the Israelites’ worship and their relationship with God. Leviticus 10:1 recounts an event involving two of Aaron’s sons, Nadab and Abihu, and their inappropriate offering of incense before the Lord. To fully understand the significance of this verse, it is important to consider the context and the surrounding passages. In Leviticus 9 we read about the consecration of Aaron and his sons as priests. They were given specific instructions by God regarding the offerings and sacrifices that were to be made in the tabernacle. This was a crucial moment in establishing the priesthood and setting the standard for proper worship.

In Leviticus 10:1 Nadab and Abihu deviated from the instructions given to them by God. They took their own censers, filled them with fire and incense, and offered what the Bible describes as “strange fire” before the Lord. The nature of this “strange fire” is not explicitly defined in the text, but it is generally understood to mean a fire that was not divinely authorized or prescribed by God. The consequences of their actions are described in the following verses (Levitics 10:2‑3): “And there went out fire from the LORD, and devoured them, and they died before the LORD. Then Moses said unto Aaron, This is it that the LORD spake, saying, I will be sanctified in them that come nigh me, and before all the people I shall be glorified.”

God’s response to Nadab and Abihu’s unauthorized offering was swift and severe. Fire came forth from the Lord and consumed them, resulting in their immediate death. This event serves as a sobering reminder of the holiness and reverence required in approaching God.

There are several important lessons we can learn from this passage. First, obedience to God’s commands: Nadab and Abihu failed to follow the specific instructions given to them by God, emphasizing the importance of obedience and following God’s Word in our lives. Second, the holiness of God: His response highlights His holiness and the expectation that His people approach Him with reverence and respect, honoring Him according to his instructions, not according to personal preferences or innovations. Third, the seriousness of worship: Worship is not a trivial matter; it requires sincerity, humility, and obedience, and offering worship not in accordance with God’s commands can have serious consequences. Fourth, the role of leaders: As priests and leaders, Nadab and Abihu’s actions had a greater impact and were held to a higher standard, reminding today’s leaders to fulfill their responsibilities with integrity and adherence to God’s commands.

In summary, Leviticus 10:1 demonstrates the importance of obedience, reverence, and faithfulness in our worship of God. It cautions us against approaching Him with a casual or careless attitude. The story of Nadab and Abihu serves as a powerful reminder that God’s commands are not to be taken lightly, and that worship should always be conducted according to His instructions.
