Leviticus 10:3

Posted on 31 August 2023
Listen to this article

Then Moses said vnto Aaron, This is it that the Lord spake, saying, I will bee sanctified in them that come nigh me, and before all the people I will be glorified: And Aaron held his peace. Leviticus 10:3 (KJV)

The verse is presented in the context of the consecration of Aaron and his sons as priests. In Leviticus 10 we read that Nadab and Abihu offered unauthorized fire and were consumed by divine fire. After that tragic event Moses addresses Aaron, explaining that what has occurred fulfills what the LORD had spoken earlier. The statement “I will be sanctified in them that come nigh me, and before all the people I will be glorified” emphasizes that God expects those who approach Him to do so with reverence, obedience, and holiness. The phrase “I will be sanctified” indicates God’s desire to be regarded as holy, and “before all the people I will be glorified” shows that His glory is to be displayed not only before the priests but before the whole community. Aaron’s silent response—“And Aaron held his peace”—signifies his acceptance of the judgment and acknowledgment of God’s sovereignty.

It is important to note that the exact quotation does not appear in any standard translation of the Bible, including the King James Version. The surrounding narrative of Leviticus 10:1‑2 records the death of Nadab and Abihu, and Moses later speaks to Aaron in verses 9‑10 with different wording. Nonetheless, the themes highlighted in the quoted passage align with the broader biblical teaching on approaching God with proper reverence.

The incident of Nadab and Abihu serves as a solemn reminder of the seriousness of approaching God contrary to His instructions. It teaches that God desires sincere worship and obedience. The consequences of their actions underscore the importance of adhering to God’s commands and honoring His holiness. As we reflect on this passage, we are reminded to approach God with reverence, recognizing His holiness, and to offer Him the worship He deserves, carefully following His instructions and seeking to glorify Him in our lives.
