And the Priest shall take the lambe of the trespasse offering, and the log of oile, and the Priest shall waue them for a waue offering before the Lord. Leviticus 14:24 (KJV)

Leviticus 14 provides instructions for the purification of a leper who has been healed. The chapter outlines the detailed rituals and sacrifices that the priest is to perform in order to pronounce the person clean and restore them to the community.

In this verse a lamb is designated as a trespass offering. The trespass offering was one of the five main types of offerings in the Old Testament, designed to atone for specific sins committed against God or others. It represented an act of acknowledging guilt and seeking forgiveness. Along with the lamb, the priest is instructed to take a log of oil. Oil often symbolizes the anointing of the Holy Spirit and is associated with consecration and empowerment in Scripture; here it may represent the restoration and renewal of the person who has been healed from leprosy. The priest is to wave the lamb and the log of oil as a wave offering before the Lord. The wave offering was a ritual act of presenting something to God and consecrating it for His service, acknowledging God’s ownership and authority over the offerings.

The trespass offering highlights the importance of recognizing our sins and acknowledging our guilt before God, teaching us to seek forgiveness and reconciliation when we have wronged God or others. The presence of the log of oil reminds us of the role of the Holy Spirit in our lives; just as the oil was used for anointing, the Holy Spirit empowers and enables us to live in obedience to God. The act of waving the offerings before the Lord signifies surrender and consecration, symbolizing our willingness to submit ourselves to God’s authority and to present our lives as an offering to Him. While this verse addresses the Old Testament purification rituals, it also points forward to the redemptive work of Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world, offering forgiveness, cleansing, and restoration to all who believe.
