Leviticus 16:16
And he shall make an atonement for the holy place, because of the uncleanness of the children of Israel, and because of their transgressions in all their sins: and so shall he do for the tabernacle of the congregation, that remaineth among them in the midst of their uncleanness.
Leviticus 16:16 (KJV)
Context
This verse belongs to the instructions for the Day of Atonement, called Yom Kippur in Hebrew. On that solemn day, the high priest entered the Most Holy Place in the tabernacle to make atonement for the sins of the people. The ritual was given by God through Moses and was central to Israel’s worship. It was an annual event, a day set apart for the cleansing of the sanctuary and the people.
Meaning
The high priest made atonement for the holy place because of the uncleanness of the children of Israel and their transgressions in all their sins. The word “uncleanness” means the impurity that sin brings, and “transgressions” are specific acts of disobedience against God’s commandments. The holy place and the tabernacle needed cleansing because the people’s sin had defiled them, even though God’s presence dwelt among them.
The high priest used the blood of the bullock and the goat, sprinkling it toward the mercy seat. This blood made atonement for the sanctuary, showing that sin pollutes not only people but also the place where God meets them. The tabernacle remained among the people in the midst of their uncleanness, so provision was made for its cleansing. The seriousness of sin is clear: it defiles even the dwelling place of God.
Biblical connections
The Day of Atonement was a temporary solution. It pointed forward to Jesus Christ, who became the eternal High Priest. Hebrews 9:11-12 explains that Christ entered the true holy place with His own blood, securing eternal redemption. His sacrifice cleanses us from all sin and enables us to dwell in God’s presence. The ritual was a shadow of the perfect and final sacrifice of Christ.
Application
This verse shows the seriousness of sin and the need for atonement. God desires His people to be purified and His sanctuary to be cleansed. As Christians, we recognize that Jesus fulfilled the role of the high priest. He offered Himself as a perfect sacrifice, once for all, cleansing us from all unrighteousness. Because of His blood, we can be confident that our sins are fully covered.
Reflection
Because of Christ, we have access to God’s presence. The cleansing that the tabernacle needed is fulfilled in us through His blood. We can approach God with confidence, knowing that our sins are forgiven and we are made clean. This truth invites us to live in gratitude and holiness, for we have been purified by the perfect sacrifice.
