Leviticus 19:29

Listen to this article

Doe not prostitute thy daughter, to cause her to be a whore, lest the land fall to whoredome, and the land become full of wickednesse. Leviticus 19:29 (KJV)

Do not prostitute your daughters or force a woman into prostitution, lest the land fall to whoredom and become full of wickedness.

Leviticus, the third book of the Bible and part of the Torah, records the laws and regulations given by God to the Israelites through Moses. Its primary focus is on outlining the instructions for worship, conduct, and the holiness of the Israelite community.

The command in Leviticus 19:29 addresses sexual immorality, specifically warning against the practice of prostitution. In the ancient world, prostitution was widespread and often linked to pagan religious rites. God’s prohibition was intended to preserve the holiness and purity of the community by forbidding the exploitation of women, including offering one’s daughters to such a life.

By prohibiting prostitution, the verse underscores the importance of maintaining sexual purity and the sanctity of relationships. Protecting the integrity of the family unit safeguards individuals from the damaging consequences of promiscuity and promotes healthy, committed, and faithful relationships within the community.

The passage also highlights broader societal implications. Allowing prostitution to become common would degrade the moral fabric of the nation, leading the land to “fall to whoredom” and become full of wickedness. The warning calls the people to consider the long‑term impact of such behavior on the spiritual health of the nation.

Although the command was given to ancient Israel, its underlying principles remain relevant for believers today. Christians are called to uphold sexual purity and to avoid any form of sexual exploitation, including prostitution. This includes refraining from participating in or supporting activities that devalue or exploit human beings. Followers of Christ are encouraged to respect the dignity and worth of every person, treating others with love and compassion.

The Bible also presents a redemptive message. God’s grace extends to all who turn to Him in repentance, offering forgiveness and transformation. Jesus demonstrated compassion toward those caught in sexual sin, providing a model for believers to extend mercy while maintaining biblical standards of morality.

In summary, Leviticus 19:29 serves as a reminder of God’s command to avoid sexual immorality, protect the sanctity of relationships, and guard the community against moral decay. Believers are called to live lives of sexual integrity, honoring the inherent worth of every individual and fostering a society rooted in holiness and compassion.
