Leviticus 19:6

Listen to this article

It shall be eaten the same day ye offer it, and on the morrow: and if ought remaine vntill the third day, it shalbe burnt in the fire. Leviticus 19:6 (KJV)

Immediate consumption of the offering: In Leviticus, God establishes guidelines for the proper handling of sacrifices and offerings. In Leviticus 19:6, the specific offering being referred to is a peace offering, as indicated in the preceding verse (Leviticus 19:5). The command states that the offering should be eaten on the same day it was presented and also on the following day.

Prohibition of delaying consumption: The verse specifies that if any portion of the offering remains uneaten until the third day, it should be burned in the fire. This implies that delaying consumption beyond the prescribed time period is unacceptable. God instructed the Israelites to treat the offerings with reverence and not to let them go to waste or spoil.

Lessons on gratitude and obedience: This command teaches the Israelites about gratitude and obedience toward God. By consuming the offering promptly, they demonstrated their acknowledgment of God’s provision and their willingness to obey His instructions. It was a way to honor God and express their gratitude for His blessings.

Symbolic significance: The requirement to eat the offering within a specific timeframe also holds symbolic meaning. The offerings were a means of atonement and worship, and the prompt consumption highlighted the urgency and immediacy of seeking reconciliation with God. It emphasized the idea of presenting oneself before God without delay and with a sincere heart.

Application for believers today: While the specific regulations concerning offerings and sacrifices no longer apply in the same way for Christians, there are principles within this verse that can be applied to our lives. It encourages us to promptly respond to God’s grace, provision, and guidance. We should not delay in expressing our gratitude, obedience, and worship to God. This verse reminds us to approach God with reverence and to honor Him by promptly fulfilling our commitments to Him.

In summary: Leviticus 19:6 conveys the importance of promptly consuming peace offerings presented to God. It teaches the Israelites about gratitude, obedience, and reverence for God’s provisions. As Christians, we can apply the underlying principles of gratitude, obedience, and prompt response to God’s grace and guidance in our own lives.
