Leviticus 2:6

Listen to this article

“Thou shalt part it in pieces, and pour oil thereon: it is a meat offering”

Context:Leviticus is a book of the Bible that provides detailed instructions for the Israelites regarding their worship, rituals, and daily life. In Leviticus 2, God gives instructions concerning the grain offerings, also known as the “meat offerings” in the King James Version.

Analysis:

The Offering:The grain offering was a voluntary offering brought by individuals to express gratitude, dedication, or as an act of worship. It was typically made of fine flour, oil, and frankincense, without leaven or honey (Leviticus 2:1). This offering represented the Israelites’ commitment to God and their dependence on Him for sustenance.

The Act of Separation:In Leviticus 2:6, God commands that the grain offering be “parted in pieces.” This act of separation symbolises the setting apart of a portion of the offering for God. By dividing the offering, the Israelites acknowledged that the portion separated was holy and dedicated to God alone.

Pouring of Oil:After parting the grain offering, the Israelites were to pour oil on it. Oil in the Bible is often associated with anointing, consecration, and the presence of the Holy Spirit. By pouring oil on the grain offering, the Israelites recognised that their offering was consecrated and set apart for God’s purposes. It signified the desire for God’s blessing and favour upon their lives.

Significance:The act of separating the offering and pouring oil on it reminds us of our need to dedicate and consecrate ourselves to God. It teaches us to set apart specific areas of our lives, talents, and resources for His glory. Just as the Israelites offered the firstfruits of their grain, we are called to offer our best to God, expressing gratitude and surrender to Him.

Application:As believers today, we don’t offer grain offerings as prescribed in Leviticus. However, we can learn from the principles behind the grain offering. We can dedicate our time, skills, possessions, and resources to God. We can offer our lives as a living sacrifice (Romans 12:1) and seek to honour Him in all that we do.

Conclusion:Leviticus 2:6 teaches us the importance of setting apart and consecrating ourselves to God. It reminds us that our offerings to God should come from a heart of gratitude and a desire to honour Him. May we continually seek to dedicate our lives and resources for His glory and be filled with the presence of the Holy Spirit as we offer ourselves to Him.
