Leviticus 20:8

And ye shall keepe my Statutes, and do them: I am the Lord which sanctifie you. Leviticus 20:8 (KJV)

The book of Leviticus belongs to the Old Testament and is primarily concerned with the religious and ceremonial laws given by God to the Israelites through Moses. It contains instructions on various aspects of worship, sacrifices, purity, and ethical living.

While Leviticus includes many passages that stress the importance of obeying God’s statutes, the specific wording quoted above is not found in Leviticus 20:8 in standard translations. Nonetheless, the broader theme of keeping God’s commandments runs throughout the book, emphasizing a call to obedience.

The verse declares, “I am the LORD which sanctify you.” The word “sanctify” means to set apart or make holy. God reminds the Israelites that He is the One who sanctifies them, setting them apart as His chosen people. The Israelites were to acknowledge God’s role in their sanctification and respond by adhering to His statutes.

Obedience to God’s statutes was a fundamental aspect of the covenant relationship between God and His people. By obeying His commands, the Israelites demonstrated their faith, trust, and loyalty to God. Their obedience also reflected a commitment to live in accordance with God’s moral and ethical standards.

Application for today:

Importance of God’s Word – Just as the Israelites were instructed to keep God’s statutes, we are called to study, understand, and obey God’s Word. The Bible serves as a guide for our lives, providing wisdom, direction, and moral standards.

God’s Sanctifying Work – As believers in Christ, we understand that it is God who sanctifies us through the work of the Holy Spirit. We are set apart as God’s people and called to live holy lives, requiring a personal commitment to align our actions and attitudes with God’s will.

Obedience and Faith – Obedience is an expression of our faith and trust in God. Through our obedience we demonstrate our love for Him and our desire to honor Him in all areas of life.

Covenant Relationship – Just as the Israelites had a covenant relationship with God, believers today have a covenant relationship with Him through Jesus Christ. Our obedience to God’s commands is an outpouring of gratitude for His love and salvation.

We should interpret the insights of Leviticus in light of the New Testament and the teachings of Jesus Christ, who fulfilled the law, allowing the principles of obedience and sanctification to be applied to the life of the believer today.
