Leviticus 22:14
And if a man eate of the holy thing vnwittingly, then he shall put the fift part thereof vnto it; and shall giue it vnto the Priest, with the holy thing. Leviticus 22:14 (KJV)
Leviticus 22 provides guidelines for the priests regarding their conduct and the handling of holy offerings. This verse focuses on what should be done if a person unintentionally consumes a portion of something consecrated as holy.
Leviticus is an Old Testament book that primarily deals with religious laws, worship, priesthood, cleanliness, and moral conduct. Chapter 22 is specifically concerned with the rules governing the priests’ participation in eating holy offerings.
The verse acknowledges the possibility of a person unintentionally eating something holy. The term “unwittingly” indicates that the person lacked knowledge or awareness of the item’s sacred status.
When this occurs, the individual is required to make amends by adding one‑fifth of the holy thing itself to it and giving the total to the priest. The added one‑fifth is to be given together with the remaining holy thing.
The priest served as a mediator between God and the people and was responsible for overseeing the offerings and maintaining the sanctity of the tabernacle or temple.
This passage highlights the significance of holiness and the seriousness with which the Israelites were to treat things dedicated to God. Even an unintentional violation required restitution.
These laws were specific to Israel under the Old Covenant. Christians today do not follow these instructions because Christ’s sacrifice fulfilled the Old Covenant and established a new covenant (Hebrews 8:6‑13).
Studying this verse provides insight into the historical context, the concept of holiness, and the meticulous observance required in ancient Israelite worship. It also serves as a reminder to show reverence and respect for things dedicated to God in our own lives.
