Leviticus 6:7

And the Priest shall make an atonement for him, before the Lord: and it shall bee forgiuen him, for any thing of all that he hath done, in trespassing therein. Leviticus 6:7 (KJV)

Leviticus, the third book of the Old Testament, records the laws and regulations God gave to Israel concerning worship, sacrifice, and moral conduct. Chapter 6, verses 1‑7 describe the guilt or trespass offering, a sacrifice required when a person unintentionally sins against the Lord or against another person—such as through dishonesty, fraud, or robbery. Verse 6:7 specifically states that the priest shall make atonement for the sinner before the Lord, and that the sinner’s trespass will be forgiven.

The priest functioned as a mediator between the offender and God. By performing the prescribed rituals and offering the guilt offering, the priest transferred the person’s guilt onto the sacrifice. This act acknowledged the sin, provided a means for forgiveness, and restored the individual’s relationship with God. The concept of atonement is a recurring theme throughout the Old Testament, emphasizing that sin creates separation from a holy God and that reconciliation requires a divinely instituted means.

The sacrificial system in Leviticus therefore gave Israel a concrete way to maintain right standing with God even in a sinful state. While these animal sacrifices were temporary, they also pointed forward to a greater fulfillment. The New Testament teaches that Jesus Christ, the Son of God, became the ultimate and perfect sacrifice. His death on the cross accomplished what the Levitical offerings could only anticipate: a once‑for‑all atonement for the sins of all humanity. Through faith in Christ, believers receive complete forgiveness and reconciliation with God.

In summary, Leviticus 6:7 highlights the role of the priest in effecting atonement and forgiveness for those who have trespassed. For Christians, the passage underscores the continuity of God’s redemptive plan, culminating in Christ’s finished work, which offers everlasting forgiveness to all who trust in Him.
