Leviticus 9:23

And Moses and Aaron went into the tabernacle of the congregation, and came out, and blessed the people: and the glory of the Lord appeared unto all the people.

Leviticus 9:23 (KJV)

Leviticus 9 records the consecration of Aaron and his sons as priests. This verse takes place on the eighth day of that ceremony, after Moses and Aaron had offered sacrifices according to God’s commands. They then entered the tabernacle, the tent of meeting, and came out to bless the people. The tabernacle was the central place of worship and the dwelling place of God’s presence among Israel during their wilderness journey.

Moses and Aaron’s entrance showed their access to God’s presence and their role as mediators. The exact purpose of their entry is not stated, but it likely involved prayer for God’s blessing on the newly established worship. When they came out and blessed the people, the glory of the LORD appeared to all the people, a visible sign of divine acceptance.

The blessing the priests pronounced was a central part of their role. It invoked God’s favour, protection, and prosperity upon the congregation. The specific words for this priestly blessing are given in Numbers 6:23-27. Through the priests’ intercession, the people received God’s blessing and affirmation.

The glory of the LORD was a powerful manifestation of God’s presence and approval. It symbolized His acceptance of the priests’ consecration and the offerings presented before Him. This visible glory reassured the people of God’s faithfulness. The narrative continues in verse 24 with fire coming out from before the LORD and consuming the burnt offering, causing the people to shout and fall on their faces.

This event points forward to Jesus Christ, the ultimate High Priest. Through Him, believers now have direct access to God’s presence (Hebrews 4:16). The tabernacle and the priesthood foreshadowed Christ’s role in granting us access to the Father. We can approach God boldly, seeking His guidance, blessings, and fellowship.

In the New Testament, all believers are a “royal priesthood” (1 Peter 2:9). We are called to intercede for others, bless them, and share God’s love and truth. Just as Moses and Aaron fulfilled their priestly duties, we are called to fulfil our God-given roles as representatives of Christ.

This verse teaches the importance of obedience to God’s commands. Moses and Aaron acted according to divine instructions, and God responded with His presence. When we obey God and follow His ways, we can expect His presence and blessing.

The people’s participation also matters. They were assembled to witness the ceremony and receive the blessing. We too should gather with God’s people, ready to receive His blessing and worship Him together. As we gather in worship, seek Him in prayer, and live obedient lives, His presence fills our hearts and empowers us to fulfil His purposes.

While we may not witness the same visible glory, God’s presence is still with us today. The same God who revealed His glory to Israel is present with His people now. We can trust that He accepts our worship and draws near when we seek Him sincerely.

May we embrace our priestly role, draw near to God, and seek His manifest presence. As we bless others and intercede for them, we participate in God’s kingdom work, just as Moses and Aaron did for Israel.
