Leviticus 9:5

And they brought that which Moses commanded before the tabernacle of the congregation: and all the congregation drew near and stood before the Lord.

Leviticus 9:5 (KJV)

This verse takes place on the eighth day of the consecration of Aaron and his sons as priests. Moses had commanded the people to bring specific offerings to the tabernacle, and they obeyed exactly. The whole congregation, including the elders of Israel, drew near and stood before the LORD, ready to witness His glory.

The people’s action shows the importance of exact obedience to God’s instructions. They brought what Moses commanded and presented themselves before the LORD. This reverent posture of standing before God indicates readiness to worship and receive His presence. The unity of the community in approaching God together is also significant. Their drawing near was not casual; it was a deliberate act of reverence and trust.

The laying of hands on the sin offering, as seen in Leviticus 1:4, symbolized the transfer of the community’s sins onto the animal. This ritual pointed forward to Jesus Christ, who became the perfect and final sacrifice for sin. The temporary covering of the Old Testament sacrifices foreshadowed the eternal redemption through Christ’s death and resurrection. This moment also sets the stage for the glory of the Lord to appear, as recorded in Leviticus 9:6, showing that obedience precedes the manifestation of God’s presence.

While Christians no longer practice the Levitical sacrificial system, this passage reminds us of God’s holiness and the seriousness of sin. True worship involves both bringing what God requires and presenting ourselves before Him. We can approach God with confidence because Christ has fulfilled the Law and provided eternal forgiveness.

Obedience precedes the manifestation of God’s presence. As the people stood before the LORD, so we are called to draw near to Him with reverent hearts. The consecration of the priests and the sin offering deepen our appreciation of God’s redemptive plan from the Tabernacle to the cross.
