Luke 11:46

Posted on 18 May at 14:40

“Then said he unto them, Ye fools, did not he that made that which is without make that which is within also?”

Context:And he said, Woe unto you also, ye lawyers! for ye lade men with burdens grievous to be borne, and ye yourselves touch not the burdens with one of your fingers. Luke 11:46 (KJV)

This verse is part of a passage where Jesus is addressing the religious leaders, particularly the Pharisees and lawyers, and criticizing their hypocrisy and lack of true righteousness. In this specific verse, Jesus rebukes them for their hypocrisy in emphasizing external religious observances while neglecting the inward matters of the heart.

Here are a few key points to consider in this verse:

Fools and Hypocrisy:Jesus begins by addressing the religious leaders as “fools.” This term is not meant to insult them but to highlight their lack of understanding and wisdom. He wants to challenge their perspective and correct their misguided ways.

The Maker of the External and Internal:Jesus then asks a rhetorical question to make a point. He reminds them that the same God who created the external, visible aspects of life also created the internal, unseen aspects of life. In other words, God is concerned not only with external appearances but also with the internal matters of the heart.

The Importance of the Inward:Jesus’ point is that true righteousness is not merely about adhering to external rituals or religious practices but about the condition of the heart. The Pharisees were known for meticulously observing religious rituals and laws, but their hearts were often far from God. Jesus is challenging them to focus on the internal transformation that is necessary for true righteousness.

This verse serves as a reminder to all believers that God looks beyond external appearances and rituals. He desires genuine devotion, faith, and obedience that flow from a transformed heart. It also encourages us to evaluate our own motives and priorities, ensuring that we are not just going through the motions of religious practice but are genuinely seeking to love and serve God from the depths of our being.
