Luke 11:6

Posted on 18 May at 14:08

For a friend of mine in his iourney is come to me, and I haue nothing to set before him, Luke 11:6 (KJV)

Context: Jesus had just finished teaching the disciples the Lord’s Prayer and emphasized the need for persistence in prayer. He then proceeds to share a parable to further drive home the lesson.

In this particular verse, Jesus tells a parable to illustrate the importance of persistence in prayer. Let’s explore the context and key lessons from this passage.

The Parable: Jesus presents a situation where a man has a friend who unexpectedly comes to him at midnight. The host realizes that he has nothing to offer his guest in terms of food or provisions. He therefore goes to another friend and persistently asks for three loaves of bread to meet the unexpected guest’s needs.

Importunity in Prayer: The main lesson conveyed through this parable is the importance of importunity in prayer—persistence and boldness. The host does not give up but continues to ask until he receives what is needed. Likewise, Jesus encourages His disciples, and us, to be persistent and not lose heart when praying to God.

God’s Willingness to Provide: The parable highlights God’s willingness to provide for His children when they ask. Just as the reluctant friend eventually yields and supplies the loaves, God, who is far more loving and generous, will respond to the prayers of those who seek Him persistently.

Relationship with God: The story also emphasizes the importance of a personal relationship with God. The host approaches his friend boldly because of an existing relationship. In the same way, through prayer we can approach God as our Heavenly Father, confident that He cares for us and desires to meet our needs.

Application: This parable teaches us to be persistent in our prayers, trusting in God’s willingness to provide. We should approach prayer with faith, boldness, and a deepening relationship with God. Persistent prayer demonstrates our dependence on God and our trust in His goodness and provision.
