Luke 12:1

Listen to this article

“In the meantime, when there were gathered together an innumerable multitude of people, insomuch that they trode one upon another, he began to say unto his disciples first of all, Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.”

This verse is found in the Gospel of Luke, which is one of the four Gospels in the New Testament. It is a record of the life, teachings, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Luke was a physician and a companion of the apostle Paul.

In Luke 12:1, we find Jesus speaking to a large crowd of people. The multitude had gathered around Jesus to listen to His teachings. The phrase “an innumerable multitude of people” indicates the great number of individuals who were present. The crowd was so large that they were treading on one another, meaning they were pushing and crowding to get closer to Jesus.

In this context, Jesus takes the opportunity to teach His disciples an important lesson. He addresses them first, although there were many others listening as well. Jesus warns His disciples, saying, “Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.”

The phrase “leaven of the Pharisees” refers to the teachings and attitudes of the Pharisees, who were a prominent religious group in Jesus’ time. Leaven is often used metaphorically in the Bible to represent a pervasive influence that spreads and affects everything around it. Here, it symbolizes the negative influence of the Pharisees’ hypocrisy.

Jesus warns His disciples to be cautious and vigilant, not to adopt the hypocritical attitudes and practices of the Pharisees. Hypocrisy is the act of pretending to be something one is not, of putting on a false appearance or pretending to have qualities or beliefs that one does not possess. The Pharisees were known for their outward show of piety and adherence to religious laws, but Jesus often criticized them for their lack of genuine faith and their failure to demonstrate love, mercy, and justice.

This verse reminds us that we should be careful not to fall into the trap of hypocrisy. As followers of Christ, our faith should be genuine and heartfelt, and our actions should align with our beliefs. We should strive to be authentic and sincere in our relationship with God and others, avoiding the temptation to put on a false front or engage in religious practices solely for show.

In conclusion, Luke 12:1 serves as a reminder to Jesus’ disciples, and to us today, to beware of hypocrisy and to strive for authenticity in our faith. It teaches us the importance of genuine devotion to God and genuine love for others, rather than mere outward appearances or empty religious practices.
