Luke 13:21

Listen to this article

“It is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened.”

This verse is part of a larger passage in which Jesus is teaching the crowds about the kingdom of God. He often used parables to convey spiritual truths in a way that his listeners could understand.

In this particular parable, Jesus compares the kingdom of God to leaven that a woman takes and hides in three measures of meal until it leavens the whole batch. To understand the meaning of this parable, we need to examine the context and symbolism.

The kingdom of God:Jesus often spoke about the kingdom of God, which refers to the reign and rule of God in the hearts of people and the world. It is a spiritual kingdom that is established through faith in Jesus Christ.

Leaven:In the Bible, leaven generally symbolizes something that spreads or permeates, often with a negative connotation. However, in this parable, Jesus uses leaven to illustrate the positive growth and influence of the kingdom of God.

A woman:The woman in the parable represents the people of God, specifically those who share and spread the message of the kingdom. She takes the leaven and hides it in the meal, signifying the way believers are called to live out their faith and share the Gospel with others.

Three measures of meal:The three measures of meal represent the world or society that is impacted by the kingdom of God. The three measures suggest abundance and completeness, indicating the all-encompassing nature of God’s kingdom.

The overall message of this parable is that the kingdom of God starts small but has the potential to spread and transform everything it touches. Just as a small amount of leaven can cause a whole batch of dough to rise, the influence of the kingdom of God can permeate society and bring about significant change.

This parable encourages believers to faithfully live out their faith and share the message of the kingdom, even if their efforts may seem small or insignificant. It reminds us that God can use our faithful actions and words to bring about transformation in the world, as long as we are willing to be vessels of His kingdom.

In conclusion, Luke 13:21 teaches us about the transformative power of the kingdom of God. It reminds us of our role as believers to share the Gospel and live out our faith, trusting that God can use our efforts to bring about change in the world.
