Luke 13:24

Listen to this article

“Strive to enter in at the strait gate: for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able.”

Context:Luke 13:24 is part of a larger passage where Jesus is addressing the crowd and discussing the narrow door or “strait gate” to enter the kingdom of God. He emphasizes the importance of striving to enter through this gate, warning that many will try but will not be able to enter.

The Meaning of “Strive”:The word “strive” in this verse implies making a great effort, struggling, or striving with determination. It suggests that entering the kingdom of God requires a sincere commitment and a deliberate pursuit of righteousness. It involves actively seeking and following Jesus Christ, rather than taking salvation for granted.

The “Strait Gate”:The “strait gate” refers to the narrow or restricted entrance to the kingdom of God. It signifies that salvation is not easily obtained or accessible to all. Jesus uses this metaphor to teach that there is a specific path and requirement for entering God’s kingdom.

Many Will Seek to Enter:Jesus warns that many people will have the desire or intention to enter through the strait gate. They may recognize the significance of eternal life and seek to be part of God’s kingdom. However, their seeking alone will not be enough. True salvation requires more than mere desire or interest.

Not Being Able to Enter:Despite their seeking, Jesus says that some will not be able to enter through the strait gate. This suggests that not everyone who desires salvation will obtain it. It implies that mere outward religious observance or half-hearted seeking will fall short. The inability to enter may be due to various reasons, including lack of genuine faith, failure to repent, or refusal to surrender to God’s will.

The Call to Strive:Jesus’ exhortation to “strive” implies that entering the kingdom of God requires active engagement. It involves responding to God’s grace with a wholehearted commitment to follow Him. It encompasses repentance, faith in Jesus Christ, and a transformed life empowered by the Holy Spirit. Jesus emphasizes the need for sincere effort and a genuine relationship with Him.

  • Application:Luke 13:24 encourages believers to examine their own hearts and commitment to Christ. It prompts us to consider whether we are merely seeking to enter God’s kingdom or genuinely striving to follow Jesus. It reminds us that faith without works is dead (James 2:17), and true discipleship requires wholehearted dedication.

In conclusion, Luke 13:24 emphasizes the importance of striving to enter through the strait gate, indicating that mere desire or seeking is insufficient. It calls believers to a sincere and committed pursuit of Christ, recognizing that salvation requires a genuine relationship with Him.
