Luke 14:11

“For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.”

This verse is part of a larger passage in the Gospel of Luke where Jesus is attending a meal at the house of a prominent Pharisee. In this context, Jesus observes how the guests were choosing the places of honor at the table, and he uses this opportunity to teach a lesson on humility.

Context and Setting:

Jesus often used real-life situations and parables to convey spiritual truths. In this particular instance, He was at a meal with Pharisees on the Sabbath. Observing their behavior, Jesus seized the opportunity to address the issue of pride and humility.

Message and Meaning:

a) Exaltation of the Humble: The first part of the verse states, “For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased.” This means that if someone tries to promote themselves or seeks recognition and honor, they will ultimately be humbled or brought low. The Bible consistently teaches that God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble (James 4:6, 1 Peter 5:5). God values humility and modesty in His followers.

b) Exaltation of the Humble: The second part of the verse says, “he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.” Jesus emphasizes the importance of humility. Those who willingly humble themselves, putting others before themselves and acknowledging their dependence on God, will be exalted or lifted up by God in due time. This exaltation can be both in this life and in the eternal kingdom.

Application:

  • Attitude of Humility:Jesus encourages His followers to adopt a humble attitude in their daily lives. Rather than seeking personal recognition and honor, we should focus on serving and considering others as more important than ourselves (Philippians 2:3-4). We should recognize that everything we have is a gift from God and that any achievements or successes are due to His grace.
  • Trusting in God’s Timing:Sometimes, we may feel overlooked or undervalued for our humble attitudes and actions. However, we can find comfort in knowing that God sees our hearts and will ultimately reward those who are humble. We should trust in His timing and His plan for our lives, knowing that He will exalt us in His perfect way and time.
  • Countering Pride:The verse also serves as a reminder to guard against pride. Pride can lead to self-centeredness, boasting, and a sense of entitlement. Instead, we should cultivate an attitude of humility, recognizing our weaknesses and relying on God’s strength. We should give credit and glory to God for any accomplishments, knowing that He is the source of all good things.

In summary, Luke 14:11 teaches us the importance of humility and the reversal of human expectations. By humbling ourselves, we align with God’s values and position ourselves for His exaltation. May we strive to imitate the humility of Christ and seek to serve others in love.
