“And they all with one consent began to make excuse. The first said unto him, I have bought a piece of ground, and I must needs go and see it: I pray thee have me excused.”

This verse is part of a parable told by Jesus during a meal at the house of a Pharisee. In this parable, Jesus uses the setting of a great supper to teach important spiritual truths. Let’s break down the verse and explore its significance:

Context:In the parable, a man prepared a great feast and sent out invitations to many guests. When the time for the feast arrived, the master sent his servant to call the invited guests. However, one by one, they began to make excuses for not attending the feast.

Excuse of the first guest:The verse focuses on the response of the first guest when invited to the great supper. The guest says, “I have bought a piece of ground, and I must needs go and see it: I pray thee have me excused.” This guest excuses himself by mentioning his recent purchase of land, and he feels the need to go and inspect it.

Symbolic meaning:Like many parables, this story carries deeper spiritual meaning. The first guest’s excuse reflects the distractions and worldly preoccupations that can hinder people from accepting the invitation to the Kingdom of God. The purchased piece of ground represents earthly possessions and the allure of material pursuits. It highlights the tendency of people to prioritize worldly matters over spiritual ones.

Lessons for believers:This parable teaches several lessons to believers:

  • a. Prioritizing the Kingdom: The parable emphasizes the importance of placing the Kingdom of God as a top priority in our lives. It reminds us not to be consumed by worldly pursuits or let them hinder our commitment to God.
  • b. Recognizing distractions: We need to be aware of the distractions and excuses that can keep us from fully following Jesus. Material possessions, personal ambitions, or other worldly concerns should not take precedence over our relationship with God.
  • c. Responding to God’s invitation: The parable challenges us to respond wholeheartedly to God’s invitation to enter into a relationship with Him. We should not make excuses or delay our decision to follow Him. Instead, we should accept the invitation with eagerness and faith.

Application:As believers, we can examine our own lives in light of this verse. Are we making excuses when it comes to fully committing ourselves to God? Are there worldly distractions that hinder us from prioritizing our relationship with Him? This verse prompts us to reflect on our priorities and ensure that we align them with God’s purposes.
