Luke 15:5

“And when he hath found it, he layeth it on his shoulders, rejoicing.”

Context:Luke 15 contains a series of parables taught by Jesus. In this chapter, Jesus responds to the criticism of the Pharisees and scribes who were grumbling about Jesus welcoming sinners and eating with them. The parables of the lost sheep, the lost coin, and the prodigal son illustrate God’s relentless love and His desire to seek and save the lost.

The Parable of the Lost Sheep:In this parable, Jesus talks about a shepherd who leaves the ninety-nine sheep in the wilderness to search for the one that is lost. Once the shepherd finds the lost sheep, he joyfully carries it on his shoulders back to the flock.

Symbolism and Spiritual Meaning:a. The Lost Sheep: The lost sheep represents a person who has strayed away from God and His ways. It symbolizes sinners who are separated from the fold of God’s people.

b. The Shepherd: The shepherd represents Jesus, who is the Good Shepherd (John 10:11). Jesus is compassionate and actively seeks those who are lost, demonstrating God’s love and grace.

c. Carrying the Sheep on His Shoulders: The image of the shepherd carrying the sheep on his shoulders depicts Jesus’ redemptive work. It signifies how Jesus bears our burdens and carries us back to safety and restoration. It also represents the love and care Jesus has for each individual.

d. Rejoicing: The shepherd’s joy upon finding the lost sheep represents the rejoicing in heaven when a sinner repents and returns to God (Luke 15:7). It portrays the joy that God and the angels experience when a lost soul is saved.
