Listen to this article

“Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child shall in no wise enter therein.”

Context:In this verse, Jesus is speaking to his disciples about the qualities and attitudes necessary to enter the kingdom of God.

Let’s break down the verse and explore its meaning: “Verily I say unto you”: This phrase is often used by Jesus to emphasize the importance and truthfulness of what he is about to say. It signals that he is about to make a significant statement.

“Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child”: Jesus is teaching that to enter the kingdom of God, one must have a childlike heart and attitude. Children are often characterised by qualities such as humility, trust, simplicity, and dependence.

“Shall in no wise enter therein”: This statement emphasises the seriousness of the matter. Jesus is emphasising that unless a person possesses the childlike qualities he mentioned, they will not be able to enter the kingdom of God.

The verse highlights a key principle for spiritual growth and entry into God’s kingdom. Let’s explore some possible interpretations and lessons we can draw from this verse:

Humility and dependence on God:Children are known for their humility and dependence on their parents. Similarly, Jesus calls us to approach God with humility, recognising our need for Him and relying on His grace and provision.

Trust and faith:Children have a natural tendency to trust and believe in others. Jesus encourages us to have childlike faith in God, trusting in His promises and His character.

Simplicity and openness:Children often have a simple and open approach to life. They are not burdened by scepticism or complex reasoning. In our relationship with God, we should strive for simplicity and openness, approaching Him with sincerity and genuine hearts.

Teachability and receptivity:Children have a natural curiosity and eagerness to learn. Jesus wants us to be teachable, ready to receive His teachings and guidance without arrogance or a know-it-all attitude.

Unconditional love and forgiveness:Children often love unconditionally and forgive easily. We should strive to cultivate a heart of love and forgiveness, both towards God and others, in order to enter the kingdom of God.

Overall, Luke 18:17 challenges us to examine our hearts and attitudes. It reminds us that the kingdom of God is not something we can earn or achieve through our own efforts or merits. Instead, it requires a childlike disposition characterised by humility, trust, simplicity, and receptivity. By embracing these qualities, we can enter into a deeper relationship with God and experience the blessings of His kingdom.
