Luke 18:24
And when Iesus saw that hee was very sorrowfull, he said, How hardly shal they that haue riches, enter into the kingdome of God? Luke 18:24 (KJV)
The verse belongs to the well‑known account of the rich young ruler. A wealthy young man approaches Jesus, asking what he must do to inherit eternal life. Jesus first tells him to keep the commandments, and the man replies that he has observed them since his youth. Jesus then challenges him to sell all his possessions, give the proceeds to the poor, and follow Him. The young man’s reaction is one of deep sorrow because he is very rich.
Luke 18:24 records Jesus’ response to that sorrow. He notes the man’s attachment to his riches and the difficulty he has in letting go. In saying, “How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God,” Jesus highlights the spiritual obstacles that wealth can create. Great riches often foster a sense of self‑sufficiency and a reliance on material security rather than on God, which can hinder a person’s willingness to surrender fully and recognize their need for divine salvation.
Jesus does not claim that a wealthy person is absolutely unable to enter God’s kingdom; rather, He points out the great difficulty. The temptations and distractions that accompany wealth can shift focus from spiritual matters to worldly pursuits. This theme is reinforced in the following verse (Luke 18:25), where Jesus compares the challenge to a camel passing through the eye of a needle, a vivid metaphor for near‑impossibility.
Nevertheless, the passage does not leave the reader without hope. Luke 18:27 declares, “The things which are impossible with men are possible with God.” Salvation ultimately rests on God’s grace, not on a person’s material circumstances. The power of divine grace can overcome any obstacle, including the pull of wealth.
In conclusion, Luke 18:24 teaches that material riches can pose serious spiritual challenges, yet it also reminds believers that God’s grace is limitless. Regardless of one’s wealth, anyone who humbly depends on God can be welcomed into His kingdom.
